History of Sheraton Hotels Sheraton Hotels started in 1933 when Harvard classmates Ernest Henderson and Robert Moore bought the Continental Hotel in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1937, they bought the Standard Investing Company, which managed their hotels. That same year, they bought their second hotel, the Stonehaven Hotel in Springfield, Massachusetts, a converted apartment building. The name Sheraton came from their third hotel in Boston, which already had a large lighted sign saying “Sheraton Hotel.” Instead of changing the name, they decided to use it for all their hotels.
